Color Guard is a team sport. It allows students to work with their peers, challenge themselves, enhance their communication and time management skills, and entertain audiences of all kinds. The Sherando High School Color Guard program has been active since 1993. The program has continued to grow throughout the years.

Fall Marching Season

The Color Guard is an integral part of the Marching Band, adding visual impact, emotion, and storytelling through choreographed movement and equipment work. As part of the full marching ensemble, the Color Guard helps bring each field show to life by interpreting the music with precision, elegance, and dramatic flair.
During the fall season, the Color Guard performs alongside the instrumentalists at football games, competitions, and community events. Members use flags, rifles, sabres, and dance to enhance the overall visual design of the show, contributing significantly to the band’s success.
Students in the Color Guard participate in all Marching Band activities, including band camp, weekly rehearsals, and weekend competitions. Training focuses on dance technique, equipment handling, form coordination, and expressive performance. Whether performing an emotional ballad or an energetic opener, the Guard’s presence adds power and polish to every show.
The Color Guard is open to all students, including those with no prior experience in music or performance. All training is provided, and new members are welcomed into a strong, supportive team environment. This ensemble is perfect for students interested in dance, theatre, or simply being part of an exciting and high-profile performance group.
Joining the Color Guard offers students a unique opportunity to build confidence, develop performance skills, and be part of one of the most spirited and visible organizations on campus.
Indoor Winter Color Guard

The Indoor Winter Color Guard offers students the opportunity to express themselves through movement, equipment work, and visual storytelling. Unlike the Color Guard’s role in the Marching Band, this audition-based ensemble performs independently indoors, often on a gym floor, using recorded music and custom-designed shows.
Members learn techniques for spinning flags, rifles, and sabres, while also incorporating modern dance and expressive movement. Rehearsals focus on body control, musical interpretation, and ensemble coordination. Winter Guard performances are rich with emotion and artistry, turning music into a visually compelling narrative.
The group competes in local and regional circuits such as the Atlantic Indoor Association(AIA), showcasing their creativity and skill before judges and audiences. Costumes, makeup, and set design all contribute to the overall effect of the show, allowing students to participate in a truly immersive performance experience.
